THIS WEEK at UCH+UCC - August 31, 2008 edition
the little church with a really big heart
where God is still speaking,

Dear Ones,
Happy Labor Day Weekend!  Back in the South, this was the last official weekend to wear white shoes.  Ah, but I suppose those social mores have gone by the side?sometimes I do miss that social structure!  For most folks, this week holds an "extra day" of play.  Workers and retirees alike, let's take a moment and give thanks?for the gift, grace and wonder of being able to work, esp. if your job was/is rewarding?and, for the immense impact the labor of others has upon our lives!  MLK, I think from Gandhi, used to advocate considering all the hands that make possible our daily lives?consider a meal, a work project, the clothes we wear, the furniture and tools we use.  Anything we touch has already been touched by others - from raw goods, manufacturing, transport to sales.  We are tightly woven into a global web of connections.  May be grateful and remain mindful that we are so dependent upon one another.  God bless all those workers, bless those hard-working hands!
And, remember to bring your saved WATER to church next Sunday!
In the Big Love, Rev. Kathryn

Judy Chan, of UCC Global Ministries, in Hong Kong, Reflects on the China Olympics
"For much of the world, the past 17 days have been consumed by the 2008 Summer Olympics. Yet, Hong Kong has been watching and waiting for seven years since Beijing was awarded the Games in 2001. When it was first announced, I worried whether China would be able to live up to the promises made to the international community. I knew money was not an issue but everything else might be..."
